Thinking of getting a pet?
When you are thinking of getting a new pet, it is essential that you do your research before you make your decision.
Speak to us
There are many factors you need to consider before you make your mind up. Amongst other things, a vet will be able to give you information and advice on the conditions that certain breeds are prone to.
Buy from a reputable and responsible breeder - are their dogs/kittens happy and healthy?
Ask the breeder what actions they take to ensure the health and welfare of their dogs/kittens. For some breeds there are tests that can be done to screen for certain disorders.
If you are buying a pedigree puppy or kitten, check whether the parents have been screened and that you are convinced that both the parents and the puppy/kitten are happy and healthy.
Don't base your decision on appearance alone. Responsible breeders will expect to be questioned. If you're concerned by anything you see or hear, walk away. Never buy a dog/kitten because you feel sorry for him/her.
General tips on buying a dog or kitten
Know where they come from Not all puppy/kitten breeders and sellers are reputable.
Ideally, never agree to buy a puppy/kitten without first visiting the place where they were born.
You should meet and speak to the breeder in person. At the very least, you must thoroughly check out the puppy/kitten, and if possible, see the puppy's/kitten's real mum.
Let common sense prevail. Question everything, and if something doesn't seem or feel right, it almost certainly isn't.
Think first...Think carefully about what type of dog/kitten best suits you, your home and your lifestyle.
It is crucial that you find out as much as you can about the kind of dog/kitten you are thinking of getting before you definitely make your mind up to get one.
Only then can you decide whether it is the right pet for you, and if you have the time, financial means and facilities to look after the animal properly for the whole of its life.
